The Aviva Stadium is Ireland’s world-class sports stadium. Shared by Ireland’s international Rugby, Leinster Rugby and Ireland’s international football teams.
Formally known as Lansdowne Road Stadium, it was built in 1872 and used mostly for rugby and football. After years of use and little refurbishment, the stadium had become neglected and decrepit. A decision was made in 2007 to demolish the stadium, and it reopened under its current name the Aviva stadium in 2010 as a state-of-the-art stadium. The stadium has 7 storeys and has a capacity of 51,700 people for sporting events.
The Aviva Stadium has also played host to some American College Football Games. These matches take place infrequently but when they do, they attract a great crowd with an incredible atmosphere. One of the most notable games in recent years was Norte Dame Fighting Irish Vs the Navy Midshipmen.
The Aviva is now used for different events including concerts from some of the world top performers including Lady Gaga, AC/DC, Rihanna and Madonna. The stadium can hold up 65,000 people for concerts.
